Environment Health & Safety
Our primary goal is to protect people and the environment. We work safely at all time and aim to minimise the environmental impact of our operations across all areas of on site activity. We engage with our stakeholders and seek the widest possible view of how we manage our environmental responsibilities by recognising and addressing the concerns that people have.
Achieving world-class performance
It is our goal to continually improve global environmental performance by:
- Eliminating accidents and incidents
- Minimising waste and the use of natural resources
- Ensuring that all wastes are managed safely and with care for the environment
- Sharing and using best practice
- Meeting or exceeding current standards of environment, health and safety performance
Compliance
In the UK we are governed by authorisations laid down by the Environment Agency (EA) in England and Wales or by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) in Scotland. We monitor compliance with these authorisations internally and externally by the Environment Agencies themselves.
In parallel we apply the principles of Environmental Impact Assessments, Best Practicable Environmental Option, Best Available Techniques Not Entailing Excessive Cost and Best Practicable Means to minimise the impact of our operations on the environment. Also our sites in the UK have environmental management systems that are independently certified to the international ISO 14001 standard. And a number of our reactor sites have been assessed using the international environmental rating system IERS, run by Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
