Wylfa Cares

Magnox North Wylfa Site has won Business in the Community’s Wales Cares Team of the Year award – for the team that has shown that together they can make a difference.

Wylfa Site was recognised for its Community Team Building Programme. Back in May 2009, the programme was developed when its newly formed Programmes Department decided that they may benefit from a team build. Historically, these activities ranged from uninspiring workshops to expensive, environmentally unfriendly activities such as go-karting or quad biking. The team decided to give something back to their local community, offering their varied expertise and manpower, and organised a team build at Tyddyn Môn, in Bryn Refail. They built a new activity area, designed and created an attractive tractor track and painted the shop. The team build was so successful other teams on site took on community projects, such as clearing the old railway line in Llanerchymedd and painting at Llanfechell School.  Wylfa proudly volunteered 811 hours to the community in 2009.

Wylfa was shortlisted for three other prestigious Corporate Responsibility awards – the Wales Environment Award, Responsible Procurement and the People Development Award.

John Idris Jones, Wylfa Head of Socio-Economic Development said, “The teams at Wylfa have certainly shown they can make a difference. They’ve embraced Magnox North’s corporate responsibility principles by making a sustainable, positive contribution with their team build activity. We are proud to be recognised as a caring company that gives something back. Da iawn pawb!”

Steve McEnhill, Managing Director, of Tyddyn Môn, said, “Wylfa employees came up with a innovative idea and they really got something out of it.  Friendships were forged and the next time they met our trainees it was like meeting up with old friends’.

Community Team build projects are now in high demand at Wylfa and will continue throughout the year.
